Fox and Fig
October 21, 2018
Let me say first that I am not a vegetarian. I love a good hamburger and a flavorful grilled steak. However, over the past month, so many people have asked me if I had eaten at Fox and Fig, a plant-based restaurant, that I had to try it.
What an experience! I honestly don’t know what I ate or what my friends ate, but it was all delicious. I’d love to be back in the kitchen watching just how the chef pulls off this magic.
The restaurant is located at 321 Habersham Street, an area close to down town where it is still possible to find parking. The interior is small and cozy, the service helpful and efficient, and the food is just miraculous. Lots of others obviously agree with me, as the restaurant was voted Most Vegan Friendly by the readers of the Savannah Morning News in April of this year and Best Vegetarian Restaurant by the readers of Connect Savannah in May. The day we went for lunch, all tables inside and out were filled.
It is open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and features a “brunch centric” menu, according to the website. In addition the food, Fox and Fig features an espresso bar and a pastry case with bread and croissants and good-for-you sweets.
I didn’t understand a thing I was eating – it’s plant food mimicking non-plant food, as best I could figure. I ordered the garden toast, which was a slice of ciabatta with a smear of almond cream cheese topped with cured carrots, capers and red onion ($12). And here’s the amazing thing – it tasted like I was eating smoked salmon. One friend got a burger that wasn’t a burger but tasted like one ($12). The diner next to us also ordered the burger and liked it so much he ordered another, which meant that he spent at least $24 for lunch before the tip. He appeared to be happy with this. A third friend ordered maple-ginger tamari glazed seitan (wheat gluten that looks like a piece of meat.) I do not pretend to understand, but she said it was delicious.
Fox and Fig is part of the group that includes Foxy Loxy Cafe, The Coffee Fox and Henny Penny Café. It is exciting to see what can be done with vegetarian cooking. You should go.
